I saw Ricky at Southport last Sunday and he was brilliant. I haven't seen him or DB before, but I've always liked their music. Can't help still loving Chocolate Girl, but I also really enjoyed his newer stuff. Come to think of it, Carina Round had a brilliant voice too! In fact, I had a really great time. 'Secret' warmup gig for the tour.
Well, I was at this gig, and I always promised to write a review. So here goes.
The Ayr Gaiety is probably the smallest venue Deacon Blue will play in this time round (about 500 seats) and it was packed out. The band came on stage to Born In A Storm, and about 30 seconds in, someone's mobile phone began ringing. The band stopped, everyone burst out laughing, and then the gig carried on. As Ricky started Raintown he told the (highly embarrassed) owner of the phone to "call them back - tell 'em the gig's gonna be good!" Unfortunately, the audience spent most of their time seated, rising for Real Gone Kid, but by the time Fergus came along, nobody was sitting down.
Highlights for me included Ricky reading out a supposed request for Love & Regret before telling the audience they were doing When Will You... instead, Walking Back Home, and Ricky telling the heckler shouting for Kings Of The Western World to take the anorak off :-)
The new songs got a good reception. All in all, an awesome start to the tour.

This is probably my best ever Deacon Blue gig. I got to the venue early to hear the band sound checking a song I'd never heard live before, so I knew I was in for a treat. And when they came on to Circus Lights I realized it was going to be a special night. Highlight for me was the insert into Love and Regret.
